The Hobart Doll Club holds an annual doll show showcasing work by its members and other interested dollmakers and is the highlight of our dollmaking year. The competition covers a variety of categories, and includes porcelain dolls (antique reproduction and modern), cloth dolls and teddy bears. Each year, we invite two judges from the mainland who, together with our own Dot Denison, painstakingly examine each of the hundreds of entries to award points on skill and artistry, awarding rosettes in each category and cash prizes for outstanding entries. Prizes are awarded in the following categories:
Antique Doll
of the Show After the judging has taken place the event is open to all members of the public especially collectors and makers and those interested in taking up the activity. Funds raised from the event are donated to a single specified charity agreed upon by the Club members. The Show is held at the Hellenic Hall, Federal Street, Hobart. We were honoured to have Mrs Frances Underwood, the wife of the Governor of Tasmania His Excellency the Honourable Peter Underwood AO come and open our Show. We receive entries from all over Tasmania and the mainland and our Show is one of the largest in Australia. If you would like to send an entry to the Show please contact Lyn Inglish on (03) 6295 0320, at least one month prior to the show. Please use our official 2009 Entry Form from the link here.
The Annual Doll Show is also a wonderful opportunity to see what’s new in the doll world and available for purchase from the up to 40 trade stalls at the venue. Again, stall holders come not just from all over Tasmania, but also from any number of States on the mainland. If you are interested in holding a stall please contact Lil Webberley on 6272 2749, or use this form, as soon as possible. Places are limited! We also host an Awards Dinner where the major prize winners and rosette (best in section) winners are announced. After all the hard work leading up to it, we let our hair down and have a lot of fun and get up to some high jinks. Our members, their families and all our friends, old and new, are looking forward to the annual Hobart Doll Show. The Show has become the culmination of our year, but it is not the reason we exist as a Club. That remains, as it was when we started, to gather together to further the understanding and love of dolls and each other and we all look forward to our club meetings throughout the year.
