Girls Brigade
(G.B) is an
International; uniformed,
interdenominational, Christian organisation for girls
from
grades 1-12. G.B. is made up of companies run by a
Captain with the
assistance of leaders. They meet weekly
during school terms, under the guidance
of a church.
In Tasmania there are five companies, 3 in Hobart,
1 in Launceston & 1 in Burnie.
The company is made up of 4 units. Cadets grades 1&2,
Juniors grades 3-6,
Seniors grades 7&8 and Pioneers
grades 9-12. The program is made up of four achievements,
physical, educational, social
& spiritual. This includes: craft,
games, camping, cooking, singing,
devotions, general life
skills & leadership skills. Girls get a badge at the
end of
each year. They also get a service award for regular
attendance at both
G.B. and church, Sunday school or
Bible study. There are other awards they can
earn also.
Girls can also work towards the Pioneer Pin, which is
the highest National
award, & the Queens award which
is the highest International award.
Girls Brigade was formed in Ireland in 1893, commenced
in Australia in Western
Australia in 1927, slowly grew
throughout Australia, commencing in Tasmania in
1963.
